Back to Basics Photography - Understanding RawdSLR cameras and most bridge cameras have the option to shoot in raw, but what exactly is it and what are the benefits? Let me attempt to explain.
A camera raw file contains all the data that is captured when the shutter button is pressed whereas a JPEG is compressed and a lot of the data is lost. They are often called digital negatives as they serve the same purpose as the negatives in film photography; they are not ready to be used as the final image, but hold all the information and data needed to produce one. This all means that you are left with a higher image quality which also allows you to have more control and manipulate more parameters than a JPEG. All of the metadata is also still in tact, meaning that the original state can always be referred back to if needed.
So, surely you want to see the difference, right? Well you're in luck.
Top - straight out of camera (SOOC) raw. Bottom - basic adjustments done in LightRoom raw.

Project Educate: Basic Photography TerminologyPhotography Terminology
This is a term that refers to the way the lens blurs the image and the aesthetic quality of that blur. Some lenses cause the image to blur that is pleasing to the eye, whereas others blur in a more unpleasant or distracting way. It is considered good practice to have the subject of the image in focus, while the background is blurred. Bokeh occurs in the part of the image that lies outside the depth of field and photographers sometimes use a shallow focus to make the out of focus regions more prominent.
Depth of Field
This refers to how much of the scene is in focus. In portrait or macro photography, it is better to have a shallow depth of field and keep only part of the image in focus, as opposed to landscape photography where you'd generally want a larger depth of field and keep everything in focus.

"Have no fear of perfection - You'll never reach it! "
Have you studied Photography? I'm intrigued to know whether or not a qualification in Photography has made you a better, or indeed a worse photographer. Or has there been no change? This week, The Photography Blog asks whether or not a Photography Degree is worth the paper it's written on. Graduation in any field these days doesn't mean that you'll immediately get a job in your desired area. Not these days. So is it worth embarking on study related to photography when in the end, you could get to the same place without the paper stating what you are capable of? Photography is one of a small number of job areas where what you've done speaks higher volumes than whether or not you're
Urbex #16Abandoned Industries
If your local town is anything like mine, you'll find endless units on industrial estates, empty, forgotten and mostly used for 'illegal' raves and 'other' things. It's incredibly sad to see a once buzzing area filled with emptiness, rubbish and just a few scattered memories. It's even more sad these days to see the brand new buildings popping up next to the new - and then continuously remaining empty as well. Old urbex, new urbex - the contrast is weird.

"One Signature is worth a thousand implied tones..."
-Charles Swan -
In the news this week there has been a spotlight on Karren Brady, a photographer who has won a copyright ruling. The news article itself is interesting but the cautions that it turfs up for the future and current generations of photographers are slightly more concerning. The general feeling that has started to develop is that if you have assistance with setting up a shot, making a scene, posing a model and making up a person for example, those people may well have rights to your work. This is also being debated with regards to post-production and if you get somebody else to edit your work. What are your thoughts on this? And when attributing this to the deviantART community, what

If you haven't already started following PetaPixel and their awesome photography articles, then it's advisable you start right now! There are some great handy tips for people looking to refresh their photography skills or just see what others are doing. Are Slow Motion Photo booths the next big thing in wedding photography? This interesting article explores the fast rising craze of having a photo-booth at your Wedding or indeed, your event. Have you seen one of these recently at a wedding? Do you run one yourself? They tend to be even more popular than having a photographer wandering around shooting - which is quite scary, are wedding photographers dying out?

Similar to abandoned musical instruments - abandoned cars and other methods of transport have a sort of 'melancholy' feel about them. It's slightly different to a whole abandoned building, you can't take buildings with you when you move on. But it seems almost criminal to leave a car!

Enhancing Still Life Shots with LieveheersbeestjeSo you've got a still life shot but it looks nothing like those epic pieces you see hitting the front page here on deviantART - the lighting, hues and general feel of the piece is just not as good as you feel it could be. Well that's okay! Photoshop in particular helps you enhance your shots to bring out the best in them - or the worst if you're not careful.
These are basically the processes that she goes through to edit a shot - saved and uploaded to deviantART for your use (provided you read the rules.) There are many floating around - and they add that little something.
So How Do They Work?
All you need to do is download a file that contains such actions...
In this particular one lieveheersbeestje shares her Photoshop Silver & Bronze Actions. Once you've downloaded the file you just open it as you usually would and it will go straight into photoshop ready for use

“In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt.”
― Margaret Atwood
In the UK Spring is most definitely here. And with it comes a plethora of Photo-graphical opportunities. Whilst there are the flowers, trees and in particular blossoms coming into bloom there are also the youngsters. Baby Animals! Birds beginning to nest and in general it seems - an influx of human babies too! There is no shortage of opportunities to take a photo at this time of year here and there are some useful tips to get you out and about making the most of the season...
Use sunrises and sunsets - the lightest part of the day at lunchtime and the dusky evenings to capture spring landscapes at their best. Utilize the foggy mornings with sun streaming through too! Avoid white light - at this time of year it's incredibly harsh and doesn't do much to enhance your photos. And also k
